Site Assessment and Cleanup
Welcome to the Dominguez Channel Site Assessment and Cleanup Home Page. This website contains information regarding the “Dominguez Channel LNAPL Investigation” in Carson, California. Resource Environmental, LLC (www.rellc.net) in collaboration with URS Corporation (www.urscorp.com) is investigating and remediating petroleum light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) that was initially detected in January 2011. Sheens of LNAPL were observed on the channel water during low tides along and near a pipeline corridor that transects the Dominguez Channel approximately 400 feet south of the E. Carson Street Bridge.
RELLC initiated its investigation in July 2011 and implemented a remedial program to address the sheening on the channel. Since the end of 2012, sheening has been minimal as the interim remedial measures have been effective and significantly reduced the presence of sheen.
The source of the LNAPL has been determined to be most likely from pipeline release(s) during the 1950-80 era. The exact location of the leak(s) has yet to be determined and is the focus of the ongoing assessment. In general, the areas impacted by historic pipeline leak(s) have now been identified. Potential human health impacts have been investigated and no issues have been identified to date that need to be addressed.
The investigation and remediation activities will continue with minimal affect on residences and businesses. During certain times, some of the businesses and streets will be temporarily occupied by investigation and construction equipment. In order to complete this work, infrequently some traffic lanes could be temporarily closed for just a few hours Monday through Friday.
This “Dominguez Channel LNAPL Investigation” is being implemented under the oversight of the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board (LARWQCB) and with the cooperation of area businesses that have been affected by the project activities.
